Expected Enrolment: 10 – 30 students

Course Description:

This course is designed for students who seek to improve their English language skills in a supportive, faith-based environment. Using the parables from the Gospel of Luke, students will develop English conversational fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, and reading comprehension, while deepening their understanding of biblical themes. The course integrates ESL/EFL instruction with biblical content, making it ideal for learners preparing for theological study in English. Open to all levels, BES101 is especially suitable for international and multilingual students.

Responsibilities

The course designer will be responsible for the complete development and setup of BES101 of the Brightspace platform, ensuring it is ready for instructional delivery by the start of the semester. Key tasks including but not limited to:

  • Course Content Development

    • Design a full 12-week course with clearly structured weekly modules.

    • Create and upload a detailed course syllabus and a week-by-week academic calendar.

    • List at least 3 learning outcomes for the course and 3 for each one of the lectures/weeks

    • Prepare and upload 12 PowerPoint lectures (in both .pptx and .pdf formats).

    • Record and upload 12 video lectures that complement the PowerPoint presentations.

    • Prepare 12 weekly assignments, including:

    • At least 4 biblical-literature-based abstracts (written skills)

    • 1 integrative written or oral presentation assignment.

    • Create a comprehensive quiz library – covering biblical and linguistic content – of at least

    • 120 multiple-choice questions (10 per lecture topic), with:

      • Correct answers

      • Immediate feedback for both correct and incorrect responses.

    • Develop a graded exams library with another set of 120 questions (10 per topic), structured for midterm and final assessments, with answers and feedback.

    • Create rubrics for all evaluation activities.

    • Build and organize the Brightspace gradebook, ensuring alignment with assessments and course evaluation criteria.

    • Ensure the integration of theological content with ESL learning outcomes.

    • Support a culturally and linguistically diverse student population.

    • Resource and Reading Material

      • Compile a list of references and required readings, including at least:

      • The main course textbook

      • 1-2 recommended supplementary textbooks

      • 3 research articles per lecture topic (36 total)

    • Upload all assigned readings (as permitted) or provide external links in Brightspace

    • Platform Integration and Instructional Design

    • Upload and organize all content on Brightspace, ensuring:

    • Ensure weekly modules are clearly labeled, complete, and accessible

    • Link all content (lecture slides, videos, readings, and assignments) within the platform and ensure they are fully functional

    • All evaluation tools (assignments, quizzes, exams are integrated into Brightspace

    • and linked to the Gradebook.

    • Design course activities to support student engagement and learning outcomes

    • Participate in 6-8 hours of Brightspace training in August 2025

Qualifications

  • ​A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or a related field is required; a Ph.D. is preferred.

  • A certificate or graduate training in TESOL or CELTA is an asset.

  • Proven experience teaching ESL/EFL and designing curriculum.

  • Demonstrated experience in course development and/or delivery at the college or university level.

  • Familiarity with biblical content, especially the Gospel of Luke and/or experience in theological or mission-related ESL education.

  • Experience with content-based or theme-based ESL instruction.

  • Background in biblical studies or theological training.

  • Familiarity with Brightspace (D2L) or comparable LMS platforms and video lecture creation tools is an asset.

  • Ability to integrate spiritual formation with language instruction.

  • A commitment to the integration of faith and learning, consistent with ERC’s mission.

  • Sensitivity to multicultural and multilingual learners.

  • Applicants should have fluent written and oral communication skills in English.

  • Availability to complete training and meet all deadlines for course readiness by the end of October 2025.
